Many of our clients choose to take our boats to Ucluelet, BC. There are two different ways to get the boats to Ucluelet from Port Alberni:

By Road

You can pickup the boat(s) in Port Alberni and then tow them to Ucluelet on highway on highway 4. The trip is 102 km (63 miles) but it is a hilly and winding road which will limit your speed. The trip usually takes about 90 minutes if traffic is good. You’ll need a truck or SUV with a V8 that is properly equipped to tow a 4500 pound boat and trailer (or we MIGHT be able to tow for a fee – contact us).

By Water

The other option available is to launch the boat(s) in Port Alberni and then run them out to Ucluelet by water. It is approximately 50 miles (80 km) by water and takes you through Alberni Inlet and the protected waters of Barkley Sound. The trip typically takes just under 2 hours depending on water and weather conditions. We tend to prefer this method as it is a beautiful trip and the ramp in Port Alberni is great. In our opinion it is a lot less stressful than towing on the Ucluelet highway in summer traffic and then waiting around at the Island West ramp in Ucluelet!

The road from Port Alberni to Bamfield is pretty rough. Too rough for our boats and trailers. However, it is an easy 35 mile run by boat through beautiful, protected waters. Our North River Seahawks have a TON of space and can easily accommodate 4-5 adults and all their fishing gear and luggage. We have had several clients park their vehicles in Port Alberni and then run down to Bamfield with no problems at all.

Please note: We highly recommend doing this trip in the morning as the wind comes up in Alberni Inlet almost every day. You can still come back in the afternoon, but it definitely makes for a bumpier ride!

Want to rent a boat and then fish the waters surrounding Ucluelet BC?

Our rental fishing boats are based in Port Alberni BC which is a short drive to Ucluelet and is accessible by water or land. We prefer to run out to Ucluelet by water (it’s about 40 miles down Alberni Inlet and then through the protected waters of Barkley Sound), but you can also easily tow any of our boats to Ucluelet on the well maintained highway.

Ucluelet BC is an awesome town from which to base your salmon or halibut fishing adventure. There are lots of great places to stay and eat, moorage is readily available, and you have the option of fishing inshore (Barkley Sound) or offshore depending on the weather and the current fishing conditions.

The great thing about fishing from Ucluelet is the easy proximity to the offshore banks. Halibut, Chinook (King) and Coho (Silver) Salmon are available in abundance from May through September and are often caught in the 5-8 mile range.

Thinking about visiting Ucluelet BC for a fishing trip? If you have fishing and boating experience then we just might be a great option. You’ll have a ton of flexibility and our rates are less than half of what you would pay a guiding service.
